Episode 35: Big budget watch matchmaking – marking milestones and ignoring resale values

No guests this week. Instead, we've got a double helping of watch matchmaking. First cab off the rank is Big Ben, a giant of a man who's about to celebrate his 40th and wants to celebrate in style. His idea of style is pretty good – the Vacheron Constantin Overseas. His key requirement? It has to be a big watch, cos anything too small and it looks like he's robbed someone's nan. Felix and Andy chime in with some nan-approved milestone-worthy options, including Bvlgari, Moser, Chopard and Omega. Switching gears a little is Jon, a collector who already has a healthy stable of top tier of 'safe' pieces from Rolex, Patek and the like. But for his next watch, he wants to go a little wild and throw caution (along with resale value) to the wind. And because Andy and Felix are happy to oblige, they come up with some wild options, from Sarpaneva, Hublot and HYT and the like. Watches that really demonstrate just how fun watches can be, especially if you're spending a big bag of someone else's cash.

Watch Matchmaker for Ben

I'm 6 foot 7 and 17 stone, so anything under 40mm looks like I've robbed someone's nan. Other than that I'm very open to suggestions.

Andy's picks:

  1. Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Automatic in steel

  2. Moser Streamliner Centre Seconds

  3. Girard-Perregaux Laureato Skeleton

Felix's picks:

  1. IWC Portugieser Chronograph

  2. Omega Seamaster 300 in Sedna Gold

  3. Chopard Alpine Eagle

Watch Matchmaker for Jon

I want more of a "passion piece" that's just a plain fun watch with no consideration of popularity or value retention.

Andy's picks:

  1. Sarpaneva Lunations

  2. Czapek & Cie Faubourg de Cracovie Panda Bleu

  3. Konstantin Chaykin Dracula

Felix's picks:

  1. Hermès Slim d’Hermès GMT

  2. Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink 42mm

  3. HYT H0 Red Khaki
