Episode 57: J. David Weiss (superyacht designer) – on his wildest requests, why mega-yachts cost so much and his love of watches

Today’s guest, J. David Weiss, describes his job as ‘designing silly boats for silly people’ which, if we’re completely honest is a little bit of an understatement. The truth is that Weiss is one of the world’s leading designers of superyachts. So, to make the most of the opportunity, Felix and Andy decided to commission their own modest superyacht, the OT Cruiser. And while they spent the modest $30M budget, they learned some valuable tips on the finer points of yacht design. Ideal sizes, why Italy is your best choice for a shipyard, what makes helipads so tricky and some of there out there options they could go for (motorbike Pez dispenser anyone?). Of course, Weiss has a nice watch or two, but as far as great origin stories go, it’s hard to top the Rolex he pulled out of a rubbish bin. And then there’s the bit where Felix and Andy pretend to be Australian film reviewers.
